Meet @the_shrinking_stoic I’m Bart, I was on the cusp of my 30th birthday and I was in terrible health. Migraines, sleep apnea, high blood pressure, and diabetes were all a reality for me. I was scared. I was embarrassed. I was doubtful that I was going to make it to my 40th birthday. I knew that I needed a change, but years of fad diets and exercise kicks proved to me that I couldn’t do it all at once. I made up my mind at that moment to begin to implement small incremental changes into my life to make me healthier. For me, that first step was switching from regular to diet soda, then cutting out the soda, then eating more veggies. Those little victories add momentum and caused a major shift in my mindset. For the first time in my life, I felt like I COULD lose he weight. It was around that time that I also discovered the philosophy of stoicism. The layman’s definition of stoicism can best be described as the serenity prayer: God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things that I can, and the wisdom to know the difference. Stoicism forces me to control my mindset and only worry about the things that are within my control. With my page, that’ll become evident to you. Starting Tip: For anyone early in their journey, or trying to find their way, the best piece of advice I can give is to believe that you can. Believe that you can, and be sure that every decision within your control points you to the direction that you want to go.
